It’s February and still eerily dark outside but that’s no excuse for not getting your bling on! Ok so you’ve over indulged over the festive season and you’re still paying off the debt that is your Christmas present spending almost two months later. Ah the memories though, not so great when a glass of red wine was spilt down your ‘all eyes on me’ top in a boozy ‘accident’ at the work do by your boss who you secretly hate…but hey apart from that it was fun wasn’t it?
During these dreary months fashion is the thing we turn to for help (as if it ever left us) and she does her bit to cheer us up. With the new season fashion hitting the catwalk it feels like summer already! For the past year trends on the catwalk have experimented with ‘big and bold’ when it comes to statement jewellery, a good thing too just look at what our Celebrity Style inspiration has been…
Lady Gaga the Mother Monster herself with garish accessories, who could forget the oversized structured shoulder pads and smoking cigarette shades? Then Jessie J’s boyish blunt bob, spiky lips and wristbands to match-the knuckleduster ring just pushed me over the edge. Katy Perry’s totally fab big frizzy hair and retro 1980’s neon pink and yellow plastic earrings, finished off with braces! All these images are so deeply ingrained into the public consciousness. Popular jewellery has become the accessory that screams like a naughty school child who just won’t shut up in class. Gone are the ‘goody two shoes’ of jewels, the silent and minuscule pendant from a swish jewellers in London costing this year’s salary.
1980’s…Heck we can now even go back to 1970’s floral festival head wraps (speaking of the 1970’s have you noticed just how many young men are sporting long hair and beards ala Fleetwood Mac or is that just me?). Think Retro, vintage, plastic, bright neon’s and pattern clashing are all elements that sum up everything that we love about jewellery right now. It’s so totally acceptable to sport humongous Statement rings whileworking in the sombre environment of a library. Anyone regardless of age can in the words of pop’s first lady ‘Express Yourself’.

Yes there is the possibility that we may look back through old images of ourselves ten years’ time from now and think: ‘Gee whizz what were the floral Giraffe shaped brooches all about?’ or ‘Did I dream up those pink rubber earrings? Fashion and Costume jewellery are coming together in exciting new ways. More than ever it’s up to the wearer to consciously think about and be bold enough to choose pieces of jewellery that work for them. Rather than pick pieces that accentuate, fashion now asks them to ‘speak’. Be brave with that Vintage purple gemmed ring in the top drawer and wear it with total pride!
